Read Indeed! volunteer reading tutors are matched with children in kindergarten through third grades who are identified by school literacy coaches and teachers as needing additional help with reading. These struggling students do not receive any other intervention and would otherwise fall through the cracks. The most effective method of improving their reading is with one-to-one and or small group tutoring. A volunteer sits next to a student or multiple students and reads with them, reads to them, or listens to them read until they build enough vocabulary, enough comprehension, or enough fluency to read on their own.
One of the most important characteristics of being a volunteer tutor is dependability. Your students look forward to your visits. We are asking for a 1-2 hours per week commitment during the school year. Morning or early afternoon hours are offered based on the student's availability and your schedule. Each schools’ hours of operation vary. Tutors receive training prior to and during the tutoring program.
The Read Indeed! Program training is in September and tutoring begins in October for the Beaufort County School District. The elementary school locations may vary based on where the tutors are needed.
