Volunteer: Friendly Faces for Care and Companionship with HospiceVolunteering is what you make of it! At Gentiva we offer opportunities for volunteers that are flexible with their schedule and suit their interests and comfort level. Do you like reading? Do you crochet or knit? Do you fish? Do you like playing games? Maybe our patients do too! Families often ask volunteers to sit and read with their loved ones, listen to music, play games, or just sit and chat. Are you a veteran? Gentiva strives to connect those who have served with volunteers who are also veterans, which can provide a deeper connection and support. Providing care and companionship comes with kindness and an interest in connecting with people in our communities. It also comes with an understanding that families in our hospice care are going through a very challenging time, and a friendly face can make all the difference. Gentiva also has opportunities for individuals who do not want to work with patients directly but provide support to the office. This can include mailing, filing, making copies, phone calls, etc. in our office. It might also include creative tasks such as mailing birthday or holiday cards or assisting with preparing for upcoming fairs or events. You are here because you want to give back and make an impact, and we are here to provide an opportunity to make that happen. Agency: Gentiva Hospice Volunteering is what you make of it! Volunteer: Read Indeed! Tutor - Jasper CountyRead Indeed! volunteer reading tutors are matched with children in first through third grades who are identified by school literacy coaches and teachers as needing additional help with reading. These struggling students do not receive any other intervention and would otherwise fall through the cracks. The most effective method of improving their reading is with one-to-one and or small group tutoring. A volunteer sits next to a student or multiple students and reads with them, reads to them, or listens to them read until they build enough vocabulary, enough comprehension, or enough fluency to read on their own. One of the most important characteristics of being a volunteer tutor is dependability. Your students look forward to your visits. We are asking for a 1-2 hours per week commitment during the school year. Morning or early afternoon hours are offered based on the student's availability and your schedule. Each schools’ hours of operation vary. Tutors receive training prior to and during the tutoring program. The Read Indeed! Program training in September and tutoring starts in October for the Jasper County School District. The elementary school locations may vary based on where and when the tutors are needed. Volunteer: Tutor Volunteers for English as a Second LanguageBluffton Self Help is actively looking for volunteer tutors and substitute tutors for our English as a Second Language Courses (ESOL). You may be thinking, "I don't know another language"! But don't worry, you don't have to know one. You may also be thinking, "I'm not an educator!" Again, no education background is required. We will provide you with all of the training and resources you need. The classes are meant to be spoken in English so our students begin to learn our language. We use illustrations and other learning tools. The curriculum is spelled out for you as we have a Curriculum Specialist on staff. All you have to do is guide small groups (6 - 10) of adult learners through workbooks and lessons. Our biggest need is for tutors who can be available in the evening (6-8pm), but there are some opportunities during the daytime (9 - 11am). We offer classes in 4 different locations in Hilton Head, Bluffton and Hardeeville. We also have a strong need for tutors willing to serve in Hardeeville as this is a fast growing community with more affordable housing. We will host information sessions in the Fall and training sessions in November. The Spring classes will begin on January 9th, 2023 and are two hour classes taking place two times per week for 16 weeks. We understand if you come on board, that you may have travel plans and time away, life happens. We rely on substitutes to cover you when you can't lead your class. Volunteer: Handcrafted Furniture Workshop VolunteerRemember when we sat on the porch swing in the evenings and talked about our day? Remember when as kids we watched fireflies on the front lawn and saw the stars come out above our heads? Remember the first time you brought your sweetheart out to the porch for some swingin’? We developed a sense of community on our porch swing. We learned to trust each other as we let go of the day’s light and relaxed into the night. One of our longtime Habitat volunteers , Milton Lawrence, reminisced about those times and had a plan in mind when he donated his carpentry tools to our ReStore. Always thoughtful of ways to continue his giving, he decided to use his talents to design and build swings for the ReStore to sell. Beyond our highest expectations, our gifted crew of volunteer craftsmen have created The Beaufort Collection If you love to work with wood, or paint furniture, then perhaps you would also love to join our team of volunteers who produce The Beaufort Collection. Workshop hours are Tuesday through Thursday, 8:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. with a coffee and sweet treats break at 10 am.
